Tarmarks
These prints are inspired by the tarmarks that patch the cracks in roads caused by temperature changes, freezing and thawing, degree of moisture in the underlying soil and the attendant expansion and contraction, and aging of the surface covering. Terms associated with the phenomenon are: alligator (fatigue) cracking, longitudinal cracks in the wheel path caused by heavy loads, transverse cracking, raveling and aging, flushing/bleeding, corrugation and waves, sags and humps, daily temperature cycling, discontinuity in the underlying layers. The cracks are the silent communications from the earth, the patching tarmarks are the written language that gives voice to the earth’s distress. They make visible the hidden happenings in the earth below.
